The Hippodrome was built as a theater in 1905. With a capacity of 5,200, it was the largest and one of the most successful theaters of its time. The Hippodrome was known for lavish spectacles, including circus animals, diving horses, opulent sets and 500-member choruses. The most popular vaudeville artists of the day, including illusionist Harry Houdini, performed at the Hippodrome. On August 16, 1939, the Hippodrome hosted its last show.
